Professional Referrals

This page provides advice for healthcare professionals making a referral. 

Parents and parents-to-be should contact their GPs in the first instance.

Information

Direct referrals can be made by Professionals only. 

The Perinatal Mental Health Service do not provide a crisis response, referrals for women and birthing people in crisis should be made to the First Response Service (111, select the option for mental health).

If you are unsure about making a referral or question whether we are the right team for your patient, our admin team and duty workers can provide support with this and can answer any questions you may have.

Please call 0800 952 0060 and leave your name, a contact telephone number and/or email address. A duty worker will contact you at their earliest convenience during service hours: Monday to Friday 09:00-17:00. 

 

Making a Referral

Direct referrals are accepted from -

  • Midwifery
  • Health Visiting
  • Childrens Social Care & Early Help
  • Mother and Baby Units (MBU)
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and Special Care Baby Units (SCBU)
  • Primary and Secondary care mental health services

GPs can refer via the Primary Care Mental Health Service.

Making a Referral

Please ensure you complete as many details as possible, as this helps to triage the referral effectively. 

What you will need 

  • Demographic information of the patient and dates of delivery/expected delivery date. 
  • Childrens details
  • Consent information from the patient, including -
    • Consent to share information to and from other health services
    • Consent to communication via text, email, and voicemail. 
    • Consent to onward referrals to NHS Talking Therapies if this is identified during our triage.
  • Relevant clinicial information to help us conduct the triage.
