Pioneering new project receives funding award
Congratulations to CPFT non executive director Professor Peter Jones and
Dr Golam Khandaker for receiving a Data Science Award
from the MQ Mental Health research charity this week.
As one of five innovative new projects awarded funding from a second round,
they will investigate the role of inflammation in both mental and physical
illnesses.
The study will use cutting edge statistics to test if inflammation can explain why
people develop depression and heart disease together, and identify the shared
mechanisms which could pave the way for improvements in treatment and
support for these conditions.
Their project has been awarded as part of MQ’s Data Science Programme, which
champions the use of data in mental health research to develop the skills base in this
important field. £230,000 has been shared by five studies harnessing the power of
data to tackle big challenges in mental health - providing vital new insights and advancing exciting areas of discovery.
If Golam and Peter can prove that inflammation is linked to the development of depression and heart disease together, this could help clinicians to screen people to see if they’re at risk of developing these conditions, and lead to vital new treatments and prevention strategies for people living with them.
