Trust teams shortlisted for prestigious awards
Two teams at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust have been shortlisted in the prestigious Health Service Journal 2020 Awards.
The Trust's Freedom To Speak Up Service has been named among the finalists in the Freedom to Speak Up Organisation of the Year category while Springbank Ward at Fulbourn Hospital, Cambridge, is in the last eight in the Patient Safety Award.
The HSJ Awards 2020 recognise outstanding contributions to healthcare and CPFT’s teams have been shortlisted despite tough competition from over 1,000 entries in all categories.
Organisers have said those shortlisted for awards have been selected based on their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that their work has had on patient and staff experiences within the health or social care sector.
CPFT appointed its first Freedom to Speak Up Guardian in 2017, someone who staff could turn to if they wanted to raise a concern about patient care, poor practise or bullying and harassment.

“This nomination recognises the incredible effort and dedication of our Trust and all our staff over the past three years.
“The service continues to be vital to give staff at all levels of the organisation the confidence and support to speak up and raise their concerns without fear of recrimination to ensure the best care for patients and fellow colleagues.”
Springbank Ward is the only inpatient recovery unit for women with a diagnosis of personality disorder in the NHS. It became one of the first mental health wards in the country to abandon practices such as restraint and seclusion. The work of staff and the experiences of patients have previously been highlighted on BBC Radio 4 and BBC News.
Ward consultant Dr Jorge Zimbron (pictured,seated, second from left with ward staff in August last year) said: “We feel honoured to have been shortlisted for the HSJ Awards.
“It’s a testament to the brilliant work of all the team at Springbank Ward who work tirelessly to find new and innovative ways to enable our patients to keep themselves safe and aid them with their recovery.”
The judging panel for the HSJ Awards 2020 is made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community including: Sir Bruce Keogh, Chair, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s FT, Mark Axcell, Chief Executive, Black Country Healthcare FT and Caroline Beardall, Director of Workforce and OD, NHS England and NHS Improvement – South East.
Now in its 40th year, the HSJ Awards are the largest annual benchmarking and recognition programme for healthcare. Through a rigorous, fair and transparent judging process the awards produce a roll call of the best organisations, teams and people in the NHS and the wider health sector.
