CPFT’s first honorary nurse consultant in palliative care, Dr Ben Bowers, has been awarded a Fellowship of the Queen's Nursing Institute at their annual awards. This honour recognises his exceptional leadership and impact in advancing end-of-life care research and community nursing practice.

Ben has 21 years of experience as a clinical academic community nurse specialising in palliative and end-of-life care, and works with the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration East of England as Deputy Theme Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care

A Queen’s Nurse since 2009, new Fellow Ben is dedicated to advancing person-centred care through community nursing research. He co-founded and leads the UK’s Community Nursing Research Forum, collaborating closely with the QNI to build a supportive community for nursing research.

The Queen’s Nursing Institute is pivotal in supporting the development of community nursing and advocating for better care in communities across the UK. This recognition strengthens my commitment to working with colleagues to support our next generation of research leaders and advance high-quality, evidence-based end-of-life care that truly meets the needs of patients and their families."

Fellowship of the QNI was introduced in 2000, with the aim of creating an expert support base for the Institute to provide advice on nursing practice, research, policy and heath service management. QNI Fellows are known nursing leaders and experts in their field within the health and care sector, earning the respect and recognition of their peers.

Associate Director of Nursing and Quality for OPAC and Queen’s Nurse, Isobel Wilkerson said: “This is an outstanding achievement recognising and rewarding Ben’s commitment to improving community nursing care over his career in clinical practice and research. As one of 35 Queen’s Nurses working with the Trust, his expertise and leadership in palliative care continues to benefit our community nurses and patients. Ben works with our nursing teams to improve palliative care and develop their skills, bringing his latest research and guidance into best practice at CPFT.”

Over the last year, nine more CPFT staff have also been awarded the prestigious Queen's Nurse title for their commitment to commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership.
