Sun shines on Fulbourn Games

Service users, staff, carers and volunteers came together in the glorious sunshine yesterday to take part in the Fulbourn Games.

The event took place outside the Resource Centre and was organised by the Trust's Mental Health Physiotherapy Team. It aimed to give everyone a fun and interactive day, whilst recognising the benefit of movement and exercise for both physical and mental health. The day was supported by the Trust's Head to Toe Charity and Volunteer Team.

Kate Brown, Mental Health Physiotherapy Team Lead, said: "It was a fantastic day. We were so grateful to the nearly 90 staff who came along and took part and made the day a success. It was wonderful to see patients and staff engaging and interacting together with enthusiasm and participating in a variety of different events. There was a real sense of fun and enjoyment and it was really great to see the positive impact engaging in the activities has on mental wellbeing."

Interim Chief Executive Scott Haldane officially opened the games and then volunteered to do the first leg of the torch relay around the hospital grounds. Service users from George Mackenzie House, Willow Ward, Mulberrys 2 and 3, and Springbank then joined volunteers, AHP staff and corporate colleagues in a variety of activities including basketball, badminton, javelin and shotput, and football. There was also a 300-mile Fulbourn to Paris rowing and cycling machine challenge, which was smashed on both machines.

Katherine Regan, a service user on George Mackenzie House, said: "I really liked taking part. It's nice seeing everyone out in the sun. I loved watching everyone doing all the different sports. It's been brilliant."

Throughout the day, various competitions took place. The winners are:

  • Individual service users who attended the most sessions throughout the day – service user, George Mackenzie House, and service user from Willow Ward.
