CPFT’s Director of Nursing to retire after 36 years with NHS

Rachel Gomm, the Director of Nursing, Allied Health Professionals and Quality at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust has announced her retirement.

Rachel, who will leave the Trust in May, has paid tribute to the colleagues and friends she has made during 36 years with the NHS which have taken her from ward to board.

She said: “I feel incredibly privileged to have had the career I have had. I have been fortunate to work alongside many great people and make many lifelong friends.

“While working for the NHS has always been challenging, in particular the last two years, it has also been incredibly rewarding and I have always been inspired by those around me.

“I do believe this year will bring better days, and the Trust will continue to play a vital role in people’s lives and the local health system.

“It now feels the right time to step away and spend more time with my family. I’m a nurse at heart and I know I will miss that and my colleagues immensely when I do retire.”

Rachel joined the NHS in 1986 and trained as a learning disability nurse in Cambridge. After completing her training, she moved away before returning to the area in 1993 when she joined CPFT.

She has since held many roles in children’s and adult services and became Interim Director in September 2019 before being appointed to the substantive role in March 2020.

CPFT Interim Chief Executive Scott Haldane said: "We will certainly miss Rachel’s experience, leadership, and friendship.

“She has been instrumental in the development and improvement of services; she has always championed nurses and nursing careers; and has led the introduction of many key initiatives. We wish her every success for the future.”

A recruitment process is now underway to find Rachel’s successor.

CPFT employs more than 4,000 staff who provide community physical healthcare for older people and those with long-term conditions, mental healthcare for children and adults, children’s health services in Peterborough, learning disability support and social care support.
